Keep your thermostat above 69 degrees

During a heat wave, your air conditioner is working very hard. Extended run times that come with a very low setting on your thermostat can cause the evaporating coil (the part of the system that creates your cold air) to ice over and prevent the system from running. If it does, it will have to defrost before it can be used again. Prevent this issue by keeping your thermostat above 69 degrees.

Check your system’s air filter

Your system will be working hard over the next few days. Restricted airflow from dirty filters is a common failure in all types of weather. If your furnace filter is dirty, change the filter immediately. Bad airflow contributes to a frozen coil and it makes your system work harder to push air through. Balance comfort, equipment strain, and energy savings

Nobody wants to come home to a hot house only to have to wait for it to cool down. If you prefer, we suggest keeping your AC on but at a higher temperature on your thermostat so that it takes less time to cool down. An additional way to keep your home cool throughout the day (and to reduce strain on your system and your utility bills) is to ensure that your windows and doors are closed so the AC does not lose conditioned air. Also make sure you pull the drapes and close the blinds to keep that hot summer sun from making your home’s interior hot.
