Urban legends of green living

In the Seattle area there are a lot of us who are concerned enough about the environment that we take some action, or at least we think we are taking action. Some of our energy saving habits are not what they seem. Here are a few urban legends about green living that might surprise you and green living tips for what will really work.

Legend # 1

Turning down the thermostat is the best way to save energy. Do you crank down the thermostat and sweat it out in summer, or freeze in early spring to save on your energy bill? While it might lower your bill a little, it’s not the most efficient way to live greener.

💡Green living tip

Energy escapes through leaky windows, uninsulated doors, and poorly sealed ductwork—no matter what your thermostat is set to. Modern EnergyStar-rated windows and doors significantly reduce heat transfer and help your HVAC system work less. Combine that with a smart thermostat and duct sealing, and you’ll feel cooler (or warmer) and save money.

Legend # 2

I just upgraded my HVAC, so I don’t need to worry about maintenance. That brand-new heating or cooling system might be top-of-the-line, but ignoring annual maintenance or leaving your old duct system untouched can lead to poor efficiency, higher bills, and a shorter lifespan for your investment.

💡Green living tip

Spring is the perfect time to schedule an HVAC tune-up, replace dirty filters, and check for airflow issues. Don’t forget duct cleaning and sealing — it improves air quality and ensures your system isn’t wasting energy trying to push air through leaks.

Legend # 3

Hot water doesn’t use that much energy—no big deal. Think your water heater is just a background appliance? It actually accounts for up to 18% of your home’s energy use. If your unit is 10+ years old or not properly insulated, it’s likely wasting heat and money daily.

💡Green living tip

Upgrade to a high-efficiency hybrid or tankless water heater that adjusts to your household usage. And don’t forget to insulate water pipes and lower the default temperature to 120°F — it’s safer and saves energy.

Legend # 4

Keeping the lights off is enough to lower my electricity bill. While turning off lights helps, today’s homes are filled with smart devices, chargers, and entertainment systems that constantly draw power—even when “off.”

💡Green living tip

Use smart plugs or power strips that cut off “phantom” energy use. Consider upgrading to LED lighting if you haven’t already, and unplug infrequently used electronics. Want to go a step further? Ask us about whole-home energy monitoring systems.

Legend # 5

Natural = Eco-friendly. Labels like “natural,” “eco-safe,” or “biodegradable” sound great—but they’re often unregulated and misleading.

💡Green living tip

Look for third-party certifications like EnergyStar, WaterSense, or UL ECOLOGO when making upgrades. And when it comes to home systems like windows, HVAC, and water heaters, verified performance and local rebate eligibility matter more than green marketing buzzwords.

As the weather warms up, now’s the time to prep your home for summer efficiency. Ask us how upgrading your windows, HVAC, and water heater can make your home cooler, greener, and more cost-effective — without sacrificing comfort.
