What is an air handler?
An Air Handler is also known as an Electric Furnace
An air handler isn’t really a furnace but is often called an electric furnace because it sits in the same spot in your house that a furnace would. Also both have a blower that forces the cool or hot air through your duct system. The air handler actually works by using electricity to heat an element, similar to a toaster, and moves air over it via a fan, then into your home. It’s handling the air, hence the name air handler. Air handlers can also work attached to heat pumps and air conditioners to provide both heating and cooling.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using an air handler to provide home heating?
Advantages of an air handler are:
• Use it where you have no natural gas or propane available to provide heating
• More energy efficient than oil heat or electric baseboard heat
• No carbon monoxide gas to worry about, no venting outside required
• All of the heat you create goes into your home, so you don’t need to worry about wasted energy
• Perfect for use with an air source heat pump, to create energy efficient heating systems
The disadvantages are that electricity costs more than natural gas and has a slightly dryer heat feel.
