“Do You Use Subcontractors?” and 2 Other Important Questions You Should Always Ask Your HVAC Salesperson

Investing in a new HVAC system is a big decision that affects your comfort, safety (and wallet) for years to come. Ensure it’s a wise investment with these three questions.

Navigating all the steps in upgrading your HVAC system can feel complex, and it’s easy to overlook this key fact: the equipment you choose is only half the story. The people (and company) who install it play a big role in how well it performs, how long it lasts, and how protected you are if something goes wrong.

Before you sign on the dotted line, make sure you ask your HVAC salesperson these three essential questions. Their answers will tell you everything you need to know about the company’s quality, reliability, and accountability.

1. Does your company use subcontractors?

This is one of the most important questions you can ask — and one that many homeowners often don’t consider. Some HVAC companies rely on subcontractors instead of their own in-house technicians, which means the people installing your expensive new system might not actually be part of the company you hired.

Why does that matter? Because subcontractors vary widely in training, experience, and accountability. If something goes wrong, you’re often stuck trying to track down a third-party vendor instead of working directly with the company you thought you trusted.

A company that uses its own certified employees who’ve been specifically trained ensures consistency, reliability, and peace of mind. At Washington Energy Services, for example, we require consistent training and experience with the equipment we service before someone can become an installer on our team.

2. Are your employees background-checked?

Technicians have access to your home — sometimes for several hours at a time. (And many of you more trusting souls let them in while you’re gone.) Because of this, a reputable HVAC company background-checks every technician it sends out. No exceptions.

When you hear “yes” to this question, it means the company prioritizes your safety just as much as your comfort. If the answer is vague, consider it a red flag.

3. Do you warranty your own work?

A system warranty is great — but what about the workmanship? HVAC failures often come down to installation, not the equipment itself. And even if there’s a system warranty, it can be voided by incorrect installation or lack of documentation.

When a company warranties its own labor, you’re fully protected, which means fewer issues for you — no being sent back and forth between the manufacturer, the subcontractor, and a disappearing installer.

There’s also an important caveat. Even if a company warranties its work with the best of intentions, there’s nothing to guarantee that the installer won’t go out of business. This underscores one of the problems with hiring the cheapest contractor or a one-person shop. Small operators can disappear overnight — and when they’re gone, your workmanship warranty disappears with them. This leaves you footing the bill for repairs that should have been covered.

The takeaway: Make sure you choose a company with a solid presence in your community and a history of reliability. Asking these three questions can help protect your home, your investment, and your peace of mind because a trustworthy HVAC company will happily answer all of them.
