How does the heat pump part of a heat pump water heater work?

Heat pump water heaters extract heat from the air, compress it, and then deliver that heat to the water, sending out cool air as exhaust. Because the heat pump water heater uses warm ambient air to do most of the heating, it is an energy efficient way to heat water, just as an air source heat pump is an efficient way to heat a home. Your heat pump water heater needs to have air around it and will cool the surrounding space, so attics and garages are prime locations to place them.
