NATE Certified & Factory Trained

Details Matter

Our technicians are factory trained, and a majority of them have over 15 years in the industry. We offer a Gold Seal Installation Process that follows manufacturer installation guidelines, NATE and industry best practices and state codes. We maintain compliance to local and state codes and take out permits on every job where required.

Our technicians are NATE Certified. When choosing a company to perform the install, be sure to ask for NATE accreditation as not all companies obtain it. NATE exams reflect a consensus opinion of what technicians need to know to effectively service and install today’s sophisticated HVAC systems. Technicians should be NATE certified in the same way a doctor shouldn’t be practicing without a license. To protect consumers, NATE (North American Technician Excellence) formed as a 3rd party, non-profit, certification program for the HVAC industry. The NATE technical committee developed strict guidelines and tests that HVAC companies must pass in order to become NATE certified.

Why is it important to have a knowledgeable expert perform calculations to size a new furnace right for my home?

Every home is unique and selecting the right size furnace for yours is important. Having the wrong size furnace reduces its life expectancy, causes the furnace to run inefficiently and affects your overall comfort. For instance, if a furnace is sized too small, it will not heat your home completely on colder days causing it to work harder to produce the same output. A furnace that is sized too large will go into what’s called “short cycle” meaning it will turn on and off too frequently. Short cycling will shorten the life of the furnace and can cause excess moisture accumulation in your home. That’s why our knowledgeable heating experts will come to your home and perform Manual J heat loss calculations to determine the best solution for your individual home. What is the difference between one stage, two stage & modulating operation in a furnace?

One Stage Furnace

A one stage furnace operates where the gas flame is either on or off. When your home gets below the targeted temperature, the sensor will trigger the gas flame to turn on at full force. Once the sensor indicates that it has reached the targeted temperature, the heat will shut completely off. This means your homes targeted temperature is less consistent, affecting your comfort. For instance, with a target of 70 degrees, actual temperatures in your house might range as low as 66 degrees and as high as 74 degrees. Plus, the drastic on and off requires more energy usage similar to how energy is used when turning your car on and off. You wouldn’t turn your car off at every red light because it would waste fuel starting it up constantly.

Two Stage Furnace

A two stage furnace on the other hand works more efficiently and will provide more consistent temperatures for improved comfort. For a target of 70 degrees, actual temperatures in your house might range as low as 68 degrees and as high as 72 degrees.

Modulating Furnace

A modulating furnace will provide you maximum comfort and energy efficiency. It’s like using cruise control, the furnace makes incremental changes to keep your temperature steady. No rush of high fan followed by a shut off and gradual cooling. Your furnace will automatically adjust within .5 or .65% increments of your targeted temperature setting. This type of gas furnace uses fuel most efficiently since it’s not stopping and starting.

What does AFUE mean and why is it important in selecting my furnace?

AFUE stands for annual fuel utilization efficiency. That is a measure of thermal (heating) efficiency used for combustion equipment such as furnaces and condensing boilers. The AFUE is an average for the year. The higher the number, the more energy efficient it is. For example, traditional firewood is only 45-55% AFUE, which means that a significant percentage is not used for heating, and is lost in exhaust. Propane or heating oil are typically 70-89% AFUE. When you see that a furnace says 98% AFUE, such as the York Affinity 98% Furnace, that means it produces 98 BTUs of heat for every 100 BTUs of natural gas you use as fuel. Which is an amazing efficiency rating.

Most utility and EnergyStar programs only provide rebates for 95% AFUE and higher because they are looking for maximum energy savings. An 80% AFUE furnace does lose 20% of it’s fuel and is less efficient, but is perfect for homes with a heat pump hybrid system, and unusual layout applications. The savings you will gain from switching from an 80% AFUE furnace to a 95% one is about 15% off of your heating costs, but it could be higher if your 80% furnace is old an losing it’s efficiency.

What is the most popular equipment for heating Seattle homes?

For Seattle heating, the gas furnace tends to be the top choice. As Northwest residents have become more knowledgeable about energy efficiency, heat pumps have gained in popularity. In many city environments, ductless heat pumps are an excellent heating and cooling equipment choice, especially when replacing electric baseboard heat. They are super quiet and can work within the local noise ordinances of Seattle and surrounding areas.

Where there is space to place an air sourced heat pump, these are also ideal. They turn your furnace into an energy efficient hybrid heating and cooling system. Hybrid systems are many times more efficient than oil, propane or electric baseboard heat and you can expect to save significantly on your heating costs. Learn more about heat pump use in Seattle under our heat pump section.

Are 80% furnaces going away?

There is pending government legislation that would require most homeowners to purchase 90% AFUE furnaces or higher, exceptions need to be worked out and the laws are in court.
