Pickens, a former oil man, has made news in recent months by traveling around the country to promote an energy plan that strongly emphasizes natural gas production and the creation of a giant wind energy corridor in and around the Great Plains states.
This week, he and Owens Corning announced that they would combine their efforts to promote home energy efficiency as well, citing the potential to save over a billion barrels of oil each year. This marked the first time home energy efficiency has been named as a key part of the Pickens Plan.
"Buildings consume 40 percent of our nation's energy. That's more than industry or transportation. Energy efficiency in homes and buildings is critical to the achievement of true energy independence," said Owens Corning chairman Mike Thaman, whose company also makes blades for wind turbines.
Consumers who want to get involved and help promote energy conservation while saving money have a wide variety of home improvement options to choose from. These range from energy-saving doors and windows to full heating systems and natural gas fireplaces.
