According to the Sacramento Bee, more and more consumers are discovering the benefits of LED lights, namely the considerable cost savings and durability they offer over conventional lights. Part of the upswing in popularity is that LED lights are now cheaper than when they were first introduced, motivating more consumers to try them out.
California's state capital has also created a large holiday display using the lights.
"They fly off the hook," one hardware manager in Sacramento told the Bee, while a spokesman for the California Energy Commission told the newspaper that many of the LED lights would last for a generation.
According to a recent Forbes report, OSRAM Sylvania has reported that LED sales have doubled since last year, with up to 20 million units having been sold this year. A spokesman for MillerCoors LLC told the magazine that holiday lighting costs had fallen 60 percent since LEDs were introduced, although experts remain divided on exactly how long it takes for the lights to pay for themselves in energy savings. Estimates range from one to three seasons.
